Wedding Traditions Around The World! First Stop.... BRAZIL!

Inheritor of the European Catholic culture, the common Brazilian wedding is a mix of old tradition and the modern way of thinking. After dating for several years, the couple will decide to get married, at an average of 25 years old.

They will spend the next two or three years choosing the guests, the church, the party house, the buffet, the costumes, everything, balancing what they dreamed about and what they can afford. In the past, her family would pay for everything as the dowry.

In Brazil, it was custom to announce only to the brides’ and grooms’ families and friends.Civil marriage always precedes the religious. The church cannot, by law, perform the religious ceremony if civil marriage hasn’t been performed. For civil marriage, bride and groom must go to the office twice. The first time is for qualification that consists in a process of data analysis. The second time, thirty days later, is the ceremony itself.

The religious ceremony consists, essentially, in three stages: the procession of entry, in which the guests must be present before the bride enters, because together with the priest they represent the church that receives the couple for marital blessing; the liturgy, in which the priest pronounces holy words, blessing the marriage and there is also the signature and photos by the end; and the leaving of the participants.

A solemn church full of guests, a small orchestra opening the ceremony, the place decorated with white or yellow flowers everywhere.

After the religious ceremony it’s party time. Everybody moves to the party house. A lot of food and drinking, family, new and old friends all together, good live music all night long and everybody shaking a leg.

Suddenly, the music stops. The bride and the groom are going to dance the Waltz. However, no Brazilian wedding would be complete without the sound of a good samba school playing their powerful drums in the end.

You’re getting married soon, but the economy is in the tank. Maybe that over-the-top wedding isn’t such a good idea.

For the first time this decade, the cost of a wedding — now averaging close to $29,000, according to Wedding Report Inc., which researches trends in the wedding industry — is expected to dip slightly. In these hard times, wedding experts are increasingly dealing with what they call “budget brides.”

“We get a lot of professional girls who are concerned about not wanting to spend a lot of money on a wedding dress,” said Geraldine Brower, owner of the Bridal Garden, an appointment-only wedding boutique in Manhattan. “They’d rather put it towards a down payment on a house.”

Other common tactics include staging the ceremony in a public park and plugging in the iPod rather than hiring a deejay. Another target is food costs.

The National Association of Catering Executives said a survey of its members showed that 48 percent reported that couples were spending less on catering this year. More than 10 percent said they were noticing an increase in wedding cancellations because of the economy.

While it is well-known that Brides, grooms and their parents are stressed before the wedding day, it is important to remember that the bridal party is often anxious, too. The bridal party takes on many roles, duties and expenses during a wedding. As a bride or groom, you should remember that your friends and relatives who are taking part in the wedding are also sacrificing their time and money to participate. A few simple tips will keep relationships strong during this exciting and hectic time.

Remember Your Own Bridal Party Experiences

Before asking your bridal party to do anything, think about your own experiences in a bridal party. Did you resent being told to help with invitations? Were you left out of a fun wedding dress shopping trip? Did the groom neglect his ushers, which included you? Remembering how you felt as a member of other people's bridal parties helps you be more considerate of your own bridal party.

Communicate Duties

Let your bridal party members know exactly what you expect of them. For example, do you expect everyone to pitch in with decorating before the ceremony? Do you want the bridesmaidsto have the same shoes? Letting everyone know what you expect is important so that there are no misunderstandings.

Consider writing out a wedding planning checklist for bridesmaids and groomsmen with various events and information they need to know. Plan Ahead

Planning ahead goes hand in hand with communicating bridal party duties. You cannot expect the bridal party to be available for events or willing to help out if you do not plan ahead. For example, if you want to plan a choreographed surprise wedding dance that includes the wedding party, give them plenty of notice for setting up lessons.

Ask for Advice

Asking someone to stand up with you in front of your guests means that the bridal party members hold a special place in your lives. Honor this special place by asking for advice and input into the wedding planning decisions that relate to them. Bridesmaids might dislike low-cut gowns, while groomsmen might be able to recommend a great limousine rental.

Just because you ask for advice does not mean you are obligated to follow it. However, bridal party members will appreciate being able to express their opinion openly and honestly.
